Privacy and processing
All processing happens in this browser tab with built-in browser APIs. Nothing you type or select is sent to ToolsWebPro servers, and this tool sends no analytics about its contents. Base64 is reversible by anyone — it is an encoding, not encryption.
How to use Base64 Encoder & Decoder
- 1Choose Encode to turn text into Base64, or Decode to turn Base64 back into text.
- 2Type or paste your input — the result updates instantly.
- 3Tick URL-safe to output Base64URL for tokens, file names and query strings.
- 4Copy the result, or use Swap to feed the output back in as input.
What you can do
UTF-8 safe
Accented letters, non-Latin scripts and emoji encode and decode correctly, unlike plain btoa().
Forgiving decoder
Accepts standard Base64 and Base64URL, missing padding, spaces and line breaks.
Clear errors
Reports invalid characters, and warns when decoded bytes are binary (such as an image) rather than text.
Live conversion
No submit button; nothing leaves the page.
When this tool helps
Reading the payload section of a JWT or an API response.
Preparing a Basic Auth header value or a data string for a config file.
Decoding an email attachment fragment or encoded text you received.
About Base64 Encoder & Decoder
Base64 represents bytes using 64 printable characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /), adding = padding so the length is a multiple of four. It makes binary data safe to carry in text formats such as JSON, email and URLs, at the cost of about 33% more size. Base64URL replaces + and / with - and _ and usually drops padding so the result can sit in a URL or a JWT. This tool first converts your text to UTF-8 bytes, which is why it handles any language correctly. When decoding, it rejects input that is not valid Base64 and tells you when the result is binary data rather than text. Base64 offers no secrecy: to protect a message with a password use the text encryption tool; to fingerprint data use the SHA-256 hash generator.
Convert text to Base64 and back instantly. The converter is UTF-8 safe (accents, non-Latin scripts and emoji round-trip correctly), accepts Base64URL and missing padding when decoding, and can output URL-safe Base64 for tokens and query strings. Base64 is encoding, not encryption.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I decode a Base64 string to text?
- Choose Decode and paste the Base64 string. The decoded text appears instantly. Spaces, line breaks, missing padding and URL-safe characters are accepted.
- Is Base64 encryption?
- No. Base64 is a reversible encoding that anyone can decode. Use the text encryption tool if the content must stay private.
- What is the difference between Base64 and Base64URL?
- Base64URL replaces + with - and / with _, and usually removes = padding, so the value can be used in URLs, file names and JWTs without escaping.
- Why does decoding say the result is not UTF-8 text?
- The Base64 contains binary data such as an image, PDF or compressed file. This tool decodes text; binary data cannot be shown as readable characters.
