What this result assumes
- The spending ceilings hold sales and every non-ad cost fixed. They are not forecasts of revenue at a different advertising budget.
- Use a consistent attribution period and tax basis. Reported platform conversion value may differ from retained sales. This is not a live bidding recommendation or proof of incremental sales.
Spend sensitivity at fixed sales
Sales, refunds and every non-ad cost stay unchanged. This is arithmetic sensitivity, not a campaign forecast.
| Ad spend | ROAS | Profit after ads |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000.00 | 9× | $2,500.00 |
| $2,000.00 | 4.5× | $1,500.00 |
| $3,000.00 | 3× | $500.00 |

What is the Break-Even ROAS Calculator?
Break-even ROAS is the revenue-to-ad-spend ratio that leaves no profit after the entered costs. This calculator uses retained sales after refunds and includes fees, fulfillment and allocated overhead. It shows a fixed-sales spending ceiling and a target-profit scenario, not an ad-platform bid recommendation.
Privacy and processing
The calculation and exports run on your device. A saved scenario contains your entered financial assumptions only when you explicitly save it in this browser. No figures are uploaded or included in tool-event analytics. These are planning models, not forecasts or tax calculations.
How to use Break-Even ROAS Calculator
- 1Enter ad-attributed sales for a consistent period, excluding sales tax or VAT. Deduct only refunds and discounts that are not already removed.
- 2Enter the actual net product, shipping, return-handling, payment and other costs for those sales, plus an appropriate allocation of fixed overhead.
- 3Add ad spend, an optional order count and your target profit margin. Review retained ROAS, contribution and the maximum ad spend at these sales.
- 4Compare a second cost scenario and export the report. Read the fixed-sales sensitivity table as arithmetic, not as a forecast of campaign performance.
What you can do
Refund-aware sales
Separate gross reported conversion value from sales retained after adjustments.
Costs beyond product margin
Include fulfillment, fees and an explicit overhead allocation in the spending ceiling.
Target-profit planning
Show when a desired margin leaves a positive ad budget, or why no finite ROAS target follows from these figures.
Auditable outputs
Inspect cost per order, fixed-sales spend sensitivity and downloadable inputs and formulas.
When this tool helps
Ecommerce campaign review
Reconcile platform-attributed sales with actual refunds and costs.
Profit-target discussion
Compare what a changed cost allocation or profit goal does to the available advertising budget.
About Break-Even ROAS Calculator
ROAS divides attributed revenue by ad spend; it does not itself measure profit. Here the numerator is retained sales after the refunds or discounts you enter. At a fixed level of retained sales, subtract variable costs and allocated overhead to find the break-even ad-spend ceiling. Break-even ROAS is retained sales divided by that positive ceiling; if the ceiling is zero or negative, there is no positive ad budget under the entered assumptions. Subtract the desired profit amount from the ceiling for the target-profit case. These ratios apply to this sales-and-cost scenario: they are not a promise that increasing spend will keep sales or margins unchanged. Google explains conversion value and target ROAS; the SBA explains the underlying contribution and break-even arithmetic. Read our refunds and fees worked example before using the result in a budget discussion.
Reconcile advertising revenue with retained sales and the costs of those same sales. See actual ROAS after refunds, a break-even spending ceiling and the ROAS implied by a target profit margin. Compare scenarios, inspect spend sensitivity and export the complete calculation. The model holds sales fixed and does not predict how a campaign will respond to a budget change.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the break-even ROAS formula?
- With a positive pre-ad margin m expressed as a decimal, break-even ROAS is 1 divided by m. In this tool, m is retained sales minus the entered non-ad costs and allocated overhead, divided by retained sales. The result applies to the fixed sales-and-cost scenario you entered.
- How do refunds affect ROAS?
- Refunds and discounts reduce the sales retained from a campaign. Subtract them only if they are not already removed from your sales figure. Product costs, fee reversals and recoverable inventory must also be entered on a consistent actual-cost basis; the calculator does not infer them from the refund amount.
- Does the target ROAS tell me what bid target to use?
- No. It is a cost-based planning ratio at the entered sales, not an ad-platform bidding recommendation. Attribution quality, conversion delays, incrementality and the revenue response to a changed budget are outside this calculator.
- Why can the target ROAS be unavailable?
- If the entered costs consume all retained sales, no positive ad budget remains. A profit target can also use all remaining contribution. The tool reports that condition instead of showing an infinite ratio or a misleading zero. Zero ad spend also makes actual ROAS undefined.
