The short answer

Export your contacts from the phone as a .vcf file, open it in a VCF to CSV converter and download the CSV. Excel and Google Sheets then show one contact per row, with names, phone numbers and emails in separate columns. A .vcf cannot be opened usefully in Excel on its own.

Step 1: Export a VCF file from your phone

Menu names change between phone models and software versions. If you cannot find Export, search your phone's settings for 'export contacts'.

  • iPhone (iOS 16 or later): Open Contacts, tap Lists, touch and hold All Contacts (or another list), then choose Export. Save the .vcf to Files or send it to your computer.
  • iPhone via iCloud: On a computer, sign in to iCloud.com, open Contacts, select the contacts and choose Export vCard.
  • Android (Google Contacts app): Open Contacts, go to Fix & manage, choose Export to file, select the account and save the .vcf.
  • Samsung Contacts: Open the menu, choose Manage contacts, then Import or export contacts, then Export.
  • Google Contacts on the web: Select Export. You can pick Google CSV here and skip conversion, or vCard if you also want a file for an iPhone.

Step 2: Convert the VCF to CSV

  1. Open the VCF to CSV converter. It starts in VCF to CSV mode.
  2. Select your .vcf file. All contacts in it are read, including vCard 2.1 files from older Android phones.
  3. Check the preview: each contact is one row, with Phone 1, Phone 2 and Email 1, Email 2 columns as needed.
  4. Download the CSV. The file is created in your browser; the contacts are not uploaded.

Step 3: Open the CSV in Excel correctly

Double-clicking usually works. If everything lands in column A, or accented names look wrong, import the file instead: in Excel choose Data → From Text/CSV, select the file, set File Origin to 65001: Unicode (UTF-8) and Delimiter to Comma, then Load.

Phone numbers that start with + or 0 can be changed by Excel into numbers. Before editing, select the phone columns and set their format to Text, or import them as Text in the Power Query preview.

What the CSV contains

ColumnFrom vCard fieldNotes
Full NameFNThe display name on the phone
First, Middle, Last NameNEmpty if the contact only has a display name

Contact photos, postal addresses, birthdays and labels such as Mobile or Work are not included in the CSV. Keep the original .vcf as your full backup.

Putting edited contacts back on a phone

After cleaning duplicates or fixing numbers in Excel, convert the sheet back with the CSV to VCF converter and import the .vcf on the phone. The Excel contacts to phone guide covers the import step for iPhone and Android.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open a VCF file directly in Excel?

Not usefully. Excel shows a .vcf as raw text lines such as BEGIN:VCARD and TEL. Convert it to CSV first so each contact becomes one row.

Why are my contacts' names garbled in Excel?

Excel opened the CSV with the wrong encoding. Use Data → From Text/CSV and choose UTF-8 (65001). The ToolsWebPro converter adds a UTF-8 marker so Excel usually detects it automatically.

How do I get the contacts back onto my phone?

Edit the spreadsheet, convert it with a CSV to VCF converter, then import the .vcf into Google Contacts, iCloud or your phone's Contacts app.
