Why YouTube chapters don't show: the four rules
YouTube builds chapters from the timestamps in your video description, but only when the whole list follows a short set of rules. If a single line breaks one of them, YouTube quietly ignores the list: no segments in the progress bar, no chapter titles, and no error message telling you which line is wrong.
YouTube Help lists these requirements for chapters you add yourself. Everything else in this guide follows from them.
Quick check: paste your description into the YouTube timestamp link generator and open the chapters checker. It marks the line that fails each rule and gives you a fixed list to paste back.
| Rule (from YouTube Help) | What usually breaks it | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The first timestamp starts at 00:00 | The list starts at 0:15 or 0:30 because the intro felt too short to label | Add a 00:00 Intro line, or change the first time to 00:00 |
| At least three timestamps | Only two sections are marked | Split the video into at least three labelled parts |
| Timestamps are in ascending order | A line was pasted in the wrong place, or two lines share the same time | Sort the lines and remove the duplicate |
| Each chapter is at least 10 seconds long | Two timestamps a few seconds apart, or a final timestamp right before the end | Remove the short chapter or move its start |

A chapter list that works (copy this format)
Put one timestamp and one title on each line. Minutes and seconds are enough for videos under an hour; for longer videos write hours as well, for example 1:05:30. Keep titles short so they fit under the progress bar on a phone.
- 00:00 Intro
- 01:15 What you need
- 02:50 Camera settings
- 04:05 Lighting
- 09:30 Final result
This list passes all four rules: it starts at 00:00, has five timestamps, goes up in order, and every gap is longer than 10 seconds (assuming the video runs at least 10 seconds past 9:30). Other text in the description, above or below the list, doesn't stop chapters from working.
How to add chapters in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- In the left menu, select Content.
- Click the video you want to edit.
- Add your list of timestamps and titles to the description, with the first timestamp at 00:00.
- Check that there are at least three timestamps in ascending order and that each chapter is at least 10 seconds long.
- Click Save.
These are the steps YouTube Help gives for a video that is already uploaded. You can add the same list while uploading a new video, in the Description box on the Details step.
Your chapters vs automatic chapters
YouTube can also create chapters automatically for some videos. According to YouTube Help, chapters you write yourself take priority over automatic ones, so a valid list in your description is the reliable way to control what viewers see.
If you'd rather not get automatic chapters, you can turn them off for one video in the video's details (under Show more, untick the option that allows automatic chapters) or for all future uploads in YouTube Studio under Settings, then Upload defaults, then Advanced settings.
The list is correct but chapters still don't appear
When all four rules pass, the cause is usually not the description at all. YouTube Help names these account and video conditions:
- Advanced features: if your channel doesn't have access to them, YouTube Help says to apply for advanced features in YouTube Studio.
- Active strikes: chapters aren't available while your channel has active strikes.
- Content suitability: chapters aren't available on videos whose content may be inappropriate for some viewers.
- Eligibility: YouTube says not all videos are eligible for chapters.
One more thing to check that isn't a YouTube rule: make sure no timestamp points past the end of the video. Enter the video length in the chapters checker and it flags those lines.
How to link to an exact moment in a YouTube video
Chapters help people navigate, but often you just want to send someone to one moment, such as the answer to a question in the comments. There are three ways to make a timestamp link.
On a computer: click Share under the video, tick Start at, and type or confirm the time (for example 2:30) before copying the link.
In the YouTube app: pause the video at the moment you want, tap Share, and turn on the start-time option if your version of the app shows one. The link then uses the position the video was paused at.
By hand: add the time to the link yourself. On a youtu.be link add ?t=150 (150 seconds = 2:30); on a youtube.com/watch link add &t=150s. YouTube also accepts the 2m30s style.
Faster: paste any YouTube link into the timestamp link generator, type 2:30, and copy the share link, the full watch link, or the embed code.

Embedding a video that starts (and stops) at a set time
Embedded players use different parameters from share links. YouTube's player documentation defines start, the second at which playback begins, and end, the second at which it stops. Both are whole numbers of seconds, and end is counted from the beginning of the video, not from the start time. So to play only 2:30 to 3:45, the embed URL ends in ?start=150&end=225.
YouTube also notes that start jumps to the nearest keyframe, so playback can begin up to around two seconds before the time you asked for. If the exact first word matters, start a couple of seconds earlier.

Finish the upload: title, thumbnail and captions
Chapters work best on a video people actually click. Before you publish, check the title and description with the YouTube SEO checker, and preview your thumbnail next to the title in real feed layouts with the YouTube thumbnail tester. If you already have a caption file, the SRT to VTT converter can turn it into a plain-text transcript, which makes it quicker to find where each topic starts and pick chapter titles.

Frequently asked questions
Can I add YouTube chapters in a pinned comment?
YouTube Help only describes adding the timestamp list to the video description in YouTube Studio, so put it there. Timestamps elsewhere are not how YouTube documents chapter creation.
Why does the first chapter have to start at 0:00?
It is one of the requirements in YouTube Help: the first timestamp must start with 00:00, so the first chapter covers the opening of the video. If your list starts at 0:15, add a 00:00 Intro line above it.
What is the minimum length of a YouTube chapter?
10 seconds. Two timestamps that are closer together than that, or a last timestamp less than 10 seconds before the video ends, break the rule and stop the chapters from showing.
How many chapters does a YouTube video need?
At least three timestamps, in ascending order, with the first one at 00:00. There is no rule that you need more than three.
How long does it take for chapters to appear after I save?
YouTube doesn't publish a time. If the four rules pass and chapters still don't show after you've saved the description, check the account-level reasons: access to advanced features, active strikes, and whether the video is eligible.
How do I share a YouTube video at a specific time on a phone?
In the YouTube app, pause at the moment you want, tap Share and turn on the start-time option if your app shows it, then copy the link. You can also paste the link into a timestamp link generator, type the time, and copy a link that ends in ?t= and the number of seconds.
Check your chapters and build timestamp links
Paste your description to see which chapter rule fails and get a fixed list, or turn any YouTube link into a share or embed link that starts at the right second. Nothing is uploaded.
