Security: what our server can and can't see

The server can see

  • The room ID, when it was created and the lifetime / disappearing-message setting you picked.
  • Encrypted message blobs: their size, when they were sent and a random per-tab sender ID.
  • Normal web-server data such as IP addresses and browser type in access logs.

The server can't see

  • Your messages — they are encrypted with AES-256-GCM in your browser before upload.
  • Display names — they are encrypted together with each message.
  • The encryption key. It lives only after the # in the invite link, and browsers never send that part to a server. This page also removes it from the address bar as soon as it loads.
  • The safety code, which your browsers compute locally from the key.

Honest limits

  • Anyone who gets the full invite link can read the room — share it only over a channel you trust.
  • The encryption code is delivered by this website each time you load it, and the page also loads analytics and ad scripts, as most websites do. There is no forward secrecy: one key protects the whole room.
  • Rooms and messages are deleted from our database when the room expires or someone ends it, but we can't stop the other person from taking a screenshot.

It is a 12-digit code each browser computes locally from the room ID and the encryption key. Read it to the other person over a call or another app: if both codes match, you are using exactly the same key and the invite link was not swapped.
