What is the XRechnung Viewer?

The ToolsWebPro XRechnung Viewer opens German XRechnung e-invoices (.xml) in your browser and shows them as a readable invoice: seller and buyer with VAT IDs, the Leitweg-ID (Buyer Reference, BT-10), dates, line items, VAT and totals. It reads both XRechnung syntaxes, CII and UBL, offers German labels, flags missing mandatory fields and totals that do not add up, and saves a PDF copy. The file is not uploaded.

Supported formats

  • XRechnung 3.0 in UN/CEFACT CII (CrossIndustryInvoice)
  • XRechnung 3.0 in UBL 2.1 (Invoice and CreditNote)
  • ZUGFeRD / Factur-X PDFs with embedded XML
  • Input: .xml file, pasted XML or .pdf; output: readable invoice, PDF copy, XML download

Privacy and processing

Everything runs in your browser. The file is read with JavaScript on your device and is never uploaded to ToolsWebPro or anyone else, so you can open invoices that contain bank details and prices without sending them to a third-party service.

How to use XRechnung Viewer

  1. 1Drop the XRechnung .xml file on the upload area, choose it from your device, or paste the XML. If it came as a ZUGFeRD PDF, drop the PDF.
  2. 2The viewer detects the syntax (UN/CEFACT CII or UBL) and shows the invoice with German or English labels. Switch to DE in the toolbar for Rechnung, Lieferant, MwSt.
  3. 3Check the notices: a missing Buyer Reference (BT-10, the Leitweg-ID for public buyers) or totals that do not add up are flagged.
  4. 4Press Print / Save to PDF for a readable copy for your records, or Download XML to keep the original file.

What you can do

  • Both XRechnung syntaxes

CII (CrossIndustryInvoice) and UBL Invoice / CreditNote are parsed by the same viewer.

  • Leitweg-ID check

Shows the Buyer Reference (BT-10) and warns when it is missing, which German public portals reject.

  • German labels

Toggle EN / DE / NL / FR; the German view uses Rechnung, Gutschrift, Lieferant and Käufer.

  • Arithmetic check

Line sum, net + VAT = gross, and amount due are recalculated and compared with the declared totals.

  • Readable PDF copy

Print the A4 layout or save it as PDF from the browser print dialog.

About XRechnung Viewer

XRechnung is the German implementation of the European e-invoice standard EN 16931, maintained by KoSIT. A file is pure XML, so double-clicking it usually opens a wall of tags or nothing at all. The ToolsWebPro XRechnung Viewer turns it back into an invoice you can read: seller and buyer with VAT IDs, Leitweg-ID, invoice and due dates, line items, VAT breakdown, totals and bank details. It reads both XRechnung syntaxes, UN/CEFACT CII and UBL, and also the XML inside a ZUGFeRD PDF. The checks it runs are a quick plausibility check (mandatory fields such as BT-10, and whether the totals add up), not the official KoSIT validator, which also checks the schema and all XRechnung Schematron rules. If you also get Peppol invoices from other countries, the PEPPOL Invoice Viewer opens those too, and the PEPPOL Invoice Validator shows a pass / fail list of every check.

Open XRechnung e-invoices in your browser and read them like a normal invoice: seller, buyer, VAT IDs, Leitweg-ID (BT-10), line items, VAT and totals. Works with XRechnung in CII and UBL syntax and with ZUGFeRD PDFs, offers German labels and flags missing mandatory fields. Nothing is uploaded.

ToolsWebPro provides this tool free with no account required. Each tool explains its supported formats, processing limits and privacy behavior.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open an XRechnung file?
Drop the .xml file into the XRechnung Viewer on this page. It shows the invoice in a readable layout with German or English labels. You do not need to install anything, and the file is not uploaded.
Does the viewer support XRechnung in CII and UBL?
Yes. XRechnung exists in two syntaxes, UN/CEFACT CII (root element CrossIndustryInvoice) and UBL (Invoice or CreditNote). The viewer detects which one it is and reads both.
What is the Leitweg-ID and where is it in the file?
The Leitweg-ID is the routing ID of a German public buyer. It goes in the Buyer Reference field (BT-10): ram:BuyerReference in CII or cbc:BuyerReference in UBL. The viewer shows it and warns when BT-10 is missing.
Is this the official XRechnung validator?
No. It runs quick checks on mandatory fields and totals. The official KoSIT validator also checks the XML schema and all XRechnung rules; use it, or your portal's own check, before submitting to a public authority.
Can I convert XRechnung XML to PDF?
Yes. Open the file, then press Print / Save to PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print dialog. Keep the XML too, because for e-invoicing the XML is normally the original invoice.
Can I open a ZUGFeRD PDF here as well?
Yes. Drop the PDF and the embedded XML is extracted and shown. For a page focused on that, use the ZUGFeRD / Factur-X Viewer.
