Convert JPEG XL for apps that need JPG
Load a JXL file and choose JPG when your destination requires JPEG compatibility. Review the decoded preview, output dimensions and file size. Keep the original JPEG XL file so you retain a source for future exports.
Choose PNG when transparency matters
JPG does not preserve transparent regions; this tool places them on white. PNG can preserve transparency but may create a larger file. The JPEG path re-encodes the decoded image and is not a guarantee of lossless reconstruction.

Review individual failures and download completed files separately or as a ZIP. The workspace also offers encoding toward JXL, but that is a different direction with its own limits. Choose the intended direction before selecting source files.

How to use JXL to JPG Converter
- 1To open a .jxl: leave the JXL → JPG / PNG tab selected and drop your .jxl files on the upload box (or click to choose them).
- 2Pick the output: JPG for sharing, PNG to keep transparency and avoid any further loss, or WebP for websites. Set the quality for JPG or WebP.

- 4To make a .jxl instead: switch to the JPG / PNG → JXL tab, drop JPG, PNG or WebP images, choose a quality (90 is visually lossless) or Lossless, then click Convert to JXL and download.

JPEG XL to JPG, PNG or WebP, and JPG, PNG or WebP to JPEG XL.
Decoding uses the browser's own JPEG XL support where it exists (Safari, and Chrome 155 or Firefox 157 and later) and a WebAssembly libjxl decoder everywhere else.
Encoding uses libjxl compiled to WebAssembly, with quality, lossless and effort settings. The encoder (about 1.4 MB) only loads when you use it.
Batch conversion with a ZIP download in both directions, and a before/after size for every encoded file.
Transparent JXL images keep their alpha channel in PNG and WebP; JPG gets a white background.

About JXL to JPG Converter
ToolsWebPro's JXL to JPG converter works in both directions. JPEG XL (.jxl, ISO/IEC 18181) is a newer image format with better compression than JPEG and support for transparency, HDR and lossless images. Safari has opened it since version 17, Firefox turned it on by default in version 157 (September 2026) and Chrome in version 155, and Windows 11 24H2 can open it after installing Microsoft's free JPEG XL Image Extension. Plenty of software still can't, though: older browsers and PCs, many upload forms, WordPress by default and most messaging apps. The JXL → JPG / PNG tab decodes the file and saves it as JPG, PNG (lossless, with transparency) or WebP. The JPG / PNG → JXL tab does the reverse with libjxl: quality 90 is what libjxl calls visually lossless, and Lossless keeps every pixel. In a test with a 1920 × 1280 photo saved as a 296 KB JPG, quality 90 gave a 232 KB .jxl (21% smaller) and quality 80 gave 153 KB (48% smaller). Lossless was 1.1 MB, bigger than the JPG but 38% smaller than the same picture as a PNG. Lossless suits PNG screenshots and graphics more than JPG photos. Converting a JPG here decodes it first. That is not the bit-exact, reversible JPEG transcode that the command-line cjxl tool does. Frequently asked questions
- Can I open a JXL file without installing an app?
- The browser decoder can display supported JPEG XL files and export another format. The site may download decoder assets; the image file itself is processed locally. Unusual or very large files may exceed the supported limits.
- Is converting JXL to JPG lossless?
- Not in this tool’s JPEG export path. The decoded image is re-encoded as JPG, and metadata or HDR information may not survive. Keep the original JXL and consider PNG where you need a lossless pixel export.
- Why did the background become white?
- JPG does not support transparency. The converter flattens transparent areas against white for JPEG output. Choose PNG when your destination accepts it and transparency is important.
